The secret to success is to understand that there are no shortcuts in life – “It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure” – Colin Powell. Be prepared of the obstacles you will be facing, never give up and set goals in life. There are no real secrets to success – There are only tips and these are common knowledge that can be easily found online, books, etc. In addition, making a few conscious changes to your behavior and attitude is essential to persevere on longer term goals. Below is a list of tips that I find useful for anyone who wants to start off their engine right to be successful in our personal and professional lives.

Tip #1: Quit Procrastinating

Procrastination is the root of all evil – “There’s always another day!”  – It can deter you from achieving your goals. Yes, we tend to give ourselves hours of extra me-time every day and avoid the tasks we have a hand. However, to wake ourselves up from this never-ending lazy mindset, always be reminded of the consequences you’ll face; You are wasting precious time which can be used on something more productive. For example, reading up on interesting topics which you can use to initiate small talks with your new prospects.

Tip #2: Be Positive and Beat Negativity

The road to success is not going to be a smooth ride. It is never easy. There will be difficulties and setbacks you are going to face. There will be times when you will feel desperate and may break and cry. And this is when you question your commitment – “is this worth doing?”, “should I give up?”. These are signs of your entering the next phase of your milestones – nearing your goals – BUT A test of your courage and commitment in achieving what you want in life. These setbacks will occur whether you’re on the right path or the wrong path, so understand that while it might be hard sometimes, you’ll need to make an effort to re-establish and embrace that positivity you felt at the outset of your endeavor. Never give up! You are almost there! If you are feeling down, find someone to talk to. If you can’t find anyone, you still have us!

Tip #3: Don’t Define Yourself by Others’ Success

You’ll lose sight of your own goals and merits, and it can promote feelings of bitterness, jealousy, and inferiority. You are you, everyone is different in their own unique ways. Competition is healthy but focusing too much on others can lead you to internalize unhealthy attitudes. Also, take a step at a time and be progressive. Do not rush things blindly hoping for quick results because you will expect nothing but disappointment.

Tip #4: Embrace Rejections or Failures

Success isn’t about avoiding failure. It’s about learning from failure. Successful people anticipate and integrate failure into their lives in ways that transform it from an end into a means. Take Thomas Edison’s famous quote about inventing the light bulb: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Failure isn’t always indicative of having the wrong idea – sometimes it is simply the right idea, pursued ineffectively. You don’t have to scrap everything you have been trying all at once and or totally restructure. Do not limit yourselves, try different approaches to your idea, you can learn new methods from books, articles and even videos done by experienced people. You will be surprised that this can sometimes help you break through your toughest problems.

Tip #5: Pursue Something Meaningful to You

Do something that you can be committed to. This is especially so if it requires your long-term dedication such as a permanent job. Being committed to something means that your passion can prevent you from slacking even when you are not feeling especially driven. This does not mean that you should pursue in something you find fun 24/7, however it should be meaningful to you. At the end of the day, the effort that you put in should be something that will make you proud. Ask yourself “what you are passionate in” and “how can you improve your current lifestyle”. Very often, people give themselves excuses of their incapability because of their background. Remember that your circumstances do not define who you are and what you will become in the future. “If you are born poor it’s not your mistake, but if you die poor it’s your mistake.” – Bill Gates.

Tip #6: Prioritize Your Tasks

Good planning of your tasks is required to maximize time efficiency. Prioritize by focusing on completing tasks that are more important or will benefit you the most in the long run. It is crucial to be able to identify the difference between “most important (high-value)” tasks and “least important/low-value tasks” (often easier to complete but gain much lesser benefits).

Tip #7: Build Relationships Through Networking

Networking is essential for career success and everyone should do it now. Networking is about building authentic and genuine relationships with real people. Networking can happen anytime, anywhere. For example, it can happen at a grocery store, nightclub, online forum, volunteer event, etc… It is about making a real human connection above all else. Networking gives you access to a wealth of knowledge and experience as the people whom in your network are likely to come from different fields of expertise and backgrounds. When you have a strong network, you have a strong support team that you can turn to for guidance, advice and assistance. Your network is your most valuable and unique source of asset – a resource that will make you smarter, more experienced and more capable.

Tip #8: Learn Something New Everyday

Get in the habit of reading through things. Articles, blurbs, drafts, books and volumes of material are all worthy of your time. It’s your job to decide what exactly that means for you personally. For example, if you are aiming to become a successful speaker which you find vital as a sales representer, improve your communication skills by watching videos on famous speakers such as Tony Robbins or excellent sales presenters from your organization.
